Traces of light

Client:

Year:

Traces of light is an expanded animation project in which hand-made drawings come to real
life and occupy real spaces in the streets of Bogotá, Colombia. 'The city as an infinite canvas' - That was the
premise that inspired the whole project. To draw over the city, as if it was paper. Birds, swings, and chairs
inhabit the walls of the city, and as people interact with them the city itself changes. However, those
interactions only last while the light projections are live. The lifespan of the drawings is ephemeral, and so is
the projection.
This project was the first breakthrough I had in my creative career as an artist filmmaker, I had discovered
empirically in animation and projection a perfect marriage, the very nature of the projection spoke of the magic
of light and movement merged into one. From this project, I learned the value of the itinerant-moving projected
image, the immense value of the interaction with people, and the social commentary it sparks regarding the
projected images and the places on which those images are projected. I cherish this project so much because
I discovered this approach on my own at my residential building one morning at 4 am experimenting with
projection and drawing on paper with loop cycles.
